Lowell to Foxborough. Lawrence to Gillette. Haverhill to the World Cup. The Merrimack Valley sits about 50 to 60 miles from Gillette Stadium. On a normal day, just over an hour. On a World Cup match day — with 64,000 fans, 75% fewer parking spaces, and weekday afternoon kickoffs landing squarely in rush hour — it is a completely different story.
Salter Transportation runs charter buses that turn that trip into the simplest part of the day.
What Merrimack Valley Fans Need to Know
Seven FIFA World Cup matches at Gillette between June 13 and July 9. England, France, Morocco, Scotland, Norway, Ghana, and Haiti in the group stage. A Round of 32 on June 29 and a quarterfinal on July 9. The most-watched sporting event on the planet, less than an hour from your front door under normal conditions.
But match-day conditions at Gillette this summer are already documented. On March 26, 2026, Gillette hosted a single Brazil vs. France pre-tournament friendly — one match, well before the actual World Cup. CBS Boston reported that Foxborough’s police chief described the traffic as having flat-out “sucked,” that GPS navigation apps sent hundreds of cars off Route 1 and onto Mechanic Street and residential back roads through town, and that some fans walked 3.5 miles along train tracks rather than sit in the gridlock. France’s national team coach said his bus barely made it to the stadium on time. That was one match. The World Cup is seven full-scale FIFA events with 64,000 fans each.
Why Driving Individually Is the Hard Way
From the Merrimack Valley, your route to Foxborough runs through I-93 or I-495, then Route 1 — every one of which gets significantly worse during the late afternoon commute on weekdays. Five of seven matches kick off between 3:00 PM and 6:00 PM on weekdays. Once you arrive, only about 5,000 parking spots are available, all requiring a prepaid reservation with a match ticket. The MBTA does not serve the Merrimack Valley directly — and even MBTA-accessible fans must purchase match-day train tickets through a specific app starting April 8.
For a group of 30, 40, or 50 people, asking everyone to manage their own transportation creates confusion, late arrivals, and a fragmented experience before a single kick is taken.
